- Jemmape (department)
Jemmape is the name of a département of the
First French Empire in present Belgium. It was named after theBattle of Jemappes , fought between the French and theAustria ns in1792 near the villageJemappes , nearMons . Jemappes was spelled "Jemmape" or "Jemmapes" at the time. Its territory corresponds more or less with that of the Belgian province Hainaut. Its capital wasMons .The département came into existence in
1795 , when theSouthern Netherlands were occupied by the French. The département de Jemmape was formed from most of theCounty of Hainaut , the city ofTournai , a part of the county of Namur (Charleroi ) and of theBishopric of Liège (Thuin ). 1814 , the département became part of theUnited Kingdom of the Netherlands as the province of Hainaut. Its territory corresponds more or less with the present Belgian province Hainaut.References
