History

The village was ruled by the Ottomans. It became a part of Greece after the Greek War of Independence; a century later, it adopted its current name Agios Petros. After World War II and the Greek Civil War, its buildings were rebuilt. Agios Petros became connected with asphalt in the 1960s. More pavement was accessed in the late 20th century. Electricity, radio and automobiles were introduced in the mid-20th century, television in the late-20th century and computer and internet at the turn of the millennium. The population has been declining since the mid-20th century. Its population was once a large town and was larger than several and it had about 2,000 to 2,500 residents; it had fallen below the 1,000 mark in the mid-1990s.

The snowstorm which ravaged the eastern Peloponnese, the central, the mountainous, the northern and the island portions of Greece and most of Central and Eastern Europe brought a metre of snowfall to the village. Residents were stranded in their homes and their snow plowing vehicles cleared the road but not the streets. The snow occurred in the afternoon hours of February 2008.
