Vancouver-Mount Pleasant

Vancouver-Mount Pleasant

Vancouver-Mount Pleasant is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada. It was one of only two electoral districts to return an NDP MLA in the 2001 election when the NDP was nearly wiped off the electoral map, and it did so by a much wider margin than Vancouver-Hastings, the other seat to return a New Democrat. Vancouver-Mount Pleasant is therefore considered the safest New Democrat seat in all of British Columbia.

Demographics

Member of Legislative Assembly

Its MLA is Jenny Kwan, a former Vancouver City Councillor. She was first elected to the legislature in 1996. She represents the New Democratic Party of British Columbia. Kwan became the first Chinese-Canadian cabinet minister in B.C. history when she was appointed Minister of Municipal Affairs in February 1998. She has also been Minister of Women's Equality and Minister of Community Development, Cooperatives and Volunteers.
