Cambridge Model European Council
- Cambridge Model European Council
The Cambridge Model European Council is an annual student-run conference based in the English city of Cambridge. Young people from all across Europe, mainly students, spend one weekend simulating the European Council.
Positions
The participants play the roles of commissioners, members of the presidency, regular delegates (i.e. national ministers) and journalists.
The councils are
*GA - General Affairs
*JHA - Justice and Home Affairs
*ERC - Education, Research and Culture
*ERID - External Relations and International Development
*ECOFIN - Economic and Financial Affairs
*EET - Environment, Energy and Transport
Outcomes
Political debate in the committees of the Council is supposed to result in proposals by the commission to be accepted, amended or rejected. The voting is based on the currently valid system of Qualified majority voting.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the CMEC is to provide "hands-on" experience for young people interested in the European Union. It is meant as a way of illustrating the decision-making process by making the participants part of this process. Most delegates study related subjects, such as law, politics or languages. However, there seems to be a significant number of physicists among the organisers and participants.
