Pennsylvania , one mile (2 km) from Wilkes Barre. It was a productive coal-mining area at the start of the twentieth century. Population in 1900, 4,046; in 1910, 5,601; and in 1940, 6,371. census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,866 people, 1,245 households, and 783 families residing in the borough. Thepopulation density was 3,105.2 people per square mile (1,202.8/km²). There were 1,386 housing units at an average density of 1,501.7/sq mi (581.7/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98.46% White, 0.38% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.There were 1,245 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% were married couples living together, 14.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the borough the population was spread out with 21.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.3 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $30,592, and the median income for a family was $37,266. Males had a median income of $32,083 versus $20,378 for females. The
