Perry Township is a township in Greene County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,720 at the 2000 census.

History

It is the location of the western most point surveyed as part of the Mason-Dixon Line in 1767. In the early 1800s Perry Twp. was part of the Western frontier and immigrant families carved farms out of the forested hills. In the late 1800s oil and gas was discovered here, brining considerable prosperity to many of the Townships residents. The major town located in the township is the village of Mt. Morris in eastern Perry Township. Mt. Morris is situated just North of Morgantown, WV.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 30.3 square miles (78.5 km²), of which, 30.3 square miles (78.4 km²) of it is land and 0.03% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,720 people, 683 households, and 506 families residing in the township. The population density was 56.8 people per square mile (21.9/km²). There were 771 housing units at an average density of 25.5/sq mi (9.8/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.01% White, 0.12% African American, 0.23% Native American, and 0.64% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population.

There were 683 households out of which 28.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.9% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.91.

In the township the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 26.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $33,947, and the median income for a family was $39,750. Males had a median income of $33,636 versus $22,375 for females. The per capita income for the township was $15,696. About 10.7% of families and 12.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.6% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.
