- Ultraviolet blood irradiation
Ultraviolet blood irradiation (UBI), also known as biophotonic therapy, refers to the treatment of the
blood with variouswavelengths ofultraviolet light . It was pioneered in the 1920s by a Seattle scientist,Emmet Knott , who used it with apparent success to treat a patient who wasmoribund after aseptic abortion . [cite journal|author=Knott, Emmet K.|title=Development of Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation|journal=American Journal of Surgery|volume=76|issue=2|year=1948|pages=165–71|doi=10.1016/0002-9610(48)90068-3] and gained some popularity during the 1950s. The purposes of the therapy include improvement theoxygen levels in the blood and stimulation of theimmune system . A study also found potential for the treatment ofbronchial asthma using this technique [cite journal|author=Miley, George P., R.E. Seidel, and J.A. Christensen|title=Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation Therapy of Apparently Intractable Bronchial Asthma|journal=Archives of Physical Medicine|volume=27|year=1946|pages=24–29] . However, the effectiveness of the treatment has been questioned [cite journal|author=Schwartz, Steven et al.|title=Ultraviolet Irradiation of Blood in Man|journal=JAMA|volume=149|pages=1180–3] , and it fell out of use with the increased effectiveness of vaccines and antibiotics in mainstream treatment. The technique has experienced a resurgence in popularity since the 1990s, due to increased interest in
alternative medicine , and has been recommended for a wide variety of symptoms and disorders [ [http://www.drummartinclinic.ie/Ultraviolet_Blood_Irradiation.html Photoluminesence (Ultraviolet Light Therapy) Ultraviolet Blood Irradiation UBI ] ] . However, no recent studies have been published to confirm its effectiveness.Books
