Walker Pond is a body of water in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, found off Route 49 on the way to Wells State Park.

History

The pond took its name from settler Nathaniel Walker, a carpenter, and his wife Submit Brewer Walker, who built a house on the north end of the pond in 1748 and raised twelve children there. [cite book |author=Josiah Temple |title=History of North Brookfield, Massachusetts |year=1887 |publisher=North Brookfield |pages=p. 769 |oclc=16274445 [http://books.google.com/books?id=Aj0vGKe_JegC&pg=PA769&dq=walker+pond+sturbridge#PPA769,M1] ] (The house, since demolished, was called the Perez Walker House in memory of Nathaniel Walker's grandson, a prominent townsman.) [George Davis, "A Historical Sketch of Sturbridge and Southbridge," 47. [http://books.google.com/books?id=fUNQAAAAMAAJ&q=%22perez+walker%22&dq=%22perez+walker%22&pgis=1] ] In 1894, the town of Sturbridge voted to rename the pond Tantousque Lake, ["Proceedings of the Worcester Society of Antiquity" (1894), 106 [http://books.google.com/books?id=_y_VDDdr354C&pg=RA1-PA106&dq=walker+pond+sturbridge] ] from an Indian word meaning "located between two breast-shaped hills." [Levi Chase, "The Bay Path and Along the Way," 85. [http://books.google.com/books?id=FToTAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA85&dq=tantousque+sturbridge+smithsonian] ] The traditional Indian name did not, however, stick.

Fishing

According to a 1980 survey, the pond contains largemouth bass, chain pickerell, yellow perch, white perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, white suckers, and golden and bridled shiners. It is a popular place for ice fishing.
