New Year Island (Tasmania)

New Year Island is an island game reserve with an area of 98.22 ha, in south-eastern Australia. It is part of Tasmania’s New Year Island Group which includes the much larger King Island,[1] lying north-west of Tasmania in Bass Strait. The island forms part of the King Island Important Bird Area because of its importance for breeding seabirds and waders.[2]

Fauna

Breeding seabird and shorebird species include Short-tailed Shearwater, Fairy Prion, Pacific Gull, Silver Gull and Sooty Oystercatcher. Reptiles include Tiger Snake, White's Skink, Metallic Skink and Eastern Blue-tongued Lizard. A species of mouse is present.[3]
