Demographics

In the 2001 census, Ratua I had a population of 217,259, of which 112,462 were males and 104,797 were females. Ratua II had a population of 160,922, of which 82,346 were males and 78,576 were females.While Ratua I recorded a decadal geowth of 25.11% for the period 1991-2001, Ratua II recorded 27.96, against 24.77% decadal growth recorded in Malda district. Administration

Ratua I & II are two intermediate panchayats in Malda district. Village panchayats under Ratua I are – Baharal, Bhado, Bilaimari, Chandmoni, Debipur, Kahala, Mahanandatola, Ratua and Samsi. Village panchayats under Ratua II are Araidanga, Maharajpur, Puranpur, Peerganj, Pukhuria, Sambalpur and Sreepur. Politics

In the 2006 and 2001 elections to the state assembly Sailen Sarkar of CPI(M) won the Ratua seat defeating his nearest rivals, Asit Bose INC and Samar Mukherjee of INC respectively. Samar Mukherjee of INC defeated Mozammel Haque of CPI(M). Mumtaz Begum of CPI(M) defeated Biswanath Guha of INC in 1991 and Narendra Chandra Sinha in 1987.
