Scappoose (pronEng|ˌSCA pu:se) is a city in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It was named for a nearby stream, which drains the southern part of the county. The name "Scappoose" is of Native American origin, and is said to mean "gravelly plain." Geography

Scappoose is located at coor dms|45|45|15|N|122|52|31|W|city (45.754153, -122.875358)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.4 km²), all of it land.

Economy

In recent years, Scappoose has increasingly become a "bedroom" community of Portland, Oregon, with many commuting to jobs in the city. Dairies, farming, and logging played an important role in the early years of Scappoose's history. In the more recent past, several factories existed in the community and provided jobs. The town was home to a shoe factory, two candle factories, and a Steinfeld's Sauerkraut factory. The area still has gravel mines and the [http://www.westcoastshoe.com West Coast Shoe factory] .

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,976 people, 1,888 households, and 1,393 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,020.0 people per square mile (781.0/km²). There were 2,002 housing units at an average density of 812.7/sq mi (314.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 94.21% White, 0.32% African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 2.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.

There were 1,888 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $47,796, and the median income for a family was $55,616. Males had a median income of $43,625 versus $27,346 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,837. About 4.5% of families and 6.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.7% of those under age 18 and 7.2% of those age 65 or over.
