Goalpokhar is divided into two community development blocs. In the 2001 census, Goalpokhar I has a population of 245,603, of which 125,706 are males and 118,897 are females. Goalpokhar II has a population of 226,231, of which 114,659 are males and 109,572 are females. In the 2006 elections to the state assembly, Deepa Dasmunsi of the
Indian National Congress won the seat defeating her nearest rival Hafiz Alam Sairani of AIFB. In 2001, Hafiz Alam Sairani of AIFB defeated Deepa Dasmunsi of INC. In 1996, Hafiz Alam Sairani of AIFB defeated Md. Mustafa of INC. Md.
