Hennessey is named after Pat Hennessy an Irish cowboy who was burned on a wagon wheel on the present townsite.Demographics

census GR|2 of 2000, there were 2,058 people, 769 households, and 545 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 552.7 people per square mile (213.6/km²). There were 900 housing units at an average density of 241.7/sq mi (93.4/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 82.99% White, 0.83% African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 12.05% from other races, and 2.72% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 18.46% of the population.There were 769 households out of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.9% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.0% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.18.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $29,038, and the median income for a family was $35,560. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $18,333 for females. The
per capita income for the town was $14,012. About 11.2% of families and 16.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 23.0% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.References
