As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,582 people, 650 households, and 427 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 1,870.3 people per square mile (718.6/km²). There were 686 housing units at an average density of 811.0/sq mi (311.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.48% White, 0.51% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population.There were 650 households out of which 36.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 12.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the village the population was spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $32,708, and the median income for a family was $39,405. Males had a median income of $30,320 versus $21,384 for females. The
