Ohio ,United States , along theScioto River . The village is best known for the uranium enrichment plant located there (one of only three such plants in the United States). The population was 1,907 at the 2000 census. Originally called Jefferson, it was the county seat of Pike County from 1815-1845, when it was decided by James Emmitt, a wealthy local entrepreneur, to move the county seat to Waverly due to its closer proximity to the then new Ohio & Erie Canal. It is not a large town, but a village. It is the location of the Pike County Fairgrounds, and is served by the Scioto Valley School District.Perhaps the best-known historic resident of Piketon was Robert Lucas, the governor of Ohio and territorial governor of Iowa. Around 1824, Lucas built a large brick house two miles east of Piketon, named Friendly Grove, which became an epicenter of local political activity.

As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,907 people, 693 households, and 469 families residing in the village. Thepopulation density was 955.6 people per square mile (368.1/km²). There were 745 housing units at an average density of 373.3/sq mi (143.8/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.22% White, 1.10% African American, 0.16% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, and 2.20% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.26% of the population.There were 693 households out of which 34.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.1% were married couples living together, 21.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the village the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 76.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.1 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $21,290, and the median income for a family was $23,846. Males had a median income of $31,618 versus $21,602 for females. The
per capita income for the village was $11,599. About 28.5% of families and 30.3% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 41.5% of those under age 18 and 24.1% of those age 65 or over.References
