Highlands Primary School is a three-form entry first school with a separate nursery for 60 part time children. It is located on Highlands Gardens, Redbridge (at the intersection with Wanstead Park Road) and was built in 1905 with the addition of a "link building" in 1997. Highlands is a "Learning to Learn" school which involves a research project focussing on how brain-based research can enhance the effectiveness of teaching. The school is ethnically diverse with a wide range of extracurricular activities such as African drumming, Indian dance and instrumental, drama, recorders and orchestra, plus competitive rugby, netball and football. According to the 2007 Ofsted report, Highlands had 630 pupils between the ages of three and eleven of which "A large majority of pupils speak English as an additional language". One third of all pupils are of Pakistani heritage. The school was judged to have achieved the highest possible grade overall - Grade 1 or "Outstanding" - with only one aspect being singled out for change "Improve assessment of pupils' progress in the non-core subjects by streamlining the different systems currently in use".
