Peebles is a village in Adams County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,739 at the 2000 census.

Peebles is served by Peebles High School and the Peebles Public Library, a branch of the Adams County Public Library.

Geography

Peebles is located at coor dms|38|56|52|N|83|24|28|W|city (38.947650, -83.407764)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 1,739 people, 705 households, and 456 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,433.5 people per square mile (554.9/km²). There were 788 housing units at an average density of 649.6/sq mi (251.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.87% White, 0.35% African American, 0.75% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.06% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.46% of the population.

There were 705 households out of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.4% were married couples living together, 13.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 31.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $21,250, and the median income for a family was $25,365. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,375 for females. The per capita income for the village was $12,326. About 25.1% of families and 28.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.9% of those under age 18 and 18.0% of those age 65 or over.
