As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,066 people, 471 households, and 310 families residing in the town. Thepopulation density was 1,558.9 people per square mile (605.3/km²). There were 525 housing units at an average density of 767.7/sq mi (298.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 69.42% White, 29.55% African American, 0.75% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.There were 471 households out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.0% were married couples living together, 17.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% were non-families. 30.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the town the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 74.1 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $24,706, and the median income for a family was $31,705. Males had a median income of $26,726 versus $20,690 for females. The
