Ahoskie is a town in Hertford County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,523 at the 2000 census. Ahoskie is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. Ahoskie is known as the "only one" because there is no other town in the world known by the same name. The origin of the word Ahoskie was originally spelled "Ahotsky", and came from the Wyanoke Indians who entered Hertford County during the beginning of European settlement.

Ahoskie is located at coor dms|36|17|11|N|76|59|11|W|city (36.286439, -76.986436)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²), all land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,523 people, 1,853 households, and 1,172 families residing in the town. The population density was 656.5/km² (1,702.9/mi²). There were 2,010 housing units at an average density of 291.8/km² (756.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 37.08% White, 58.88% African American, 1.70% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.64% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.79% of the population.

There were 1,853 households out of which 29.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.8% were married couples living together, 23.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the town the population was spread out with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 75.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 67.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $22,769, and the median income for a family was $27,566. Males had a median income of $30,063 versus $23,045 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,203. About 21.7% of families and 24.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.0% of those under age 18 and 20.0% of those age 65 or over.
