Harriman is a village in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 2,252 at the 2000 census.

The Village of Harriman is in the southeast part of the Town of Monroe, with a small part in the Town of Woodbury.

Geography

Harriman is located at coor dms|41|18|30|N|74|8|50|W|city (41.308442, -74.147317)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), of which, 1.0 square miles (2.5 km²) of it is land and 1.00% is water.

NY-17, NY-17M and NY-32 connect in the village. New York Route 17, US Route 6, and Interstate 87 (New York State Thruway) connect north of the village.

Harriman State Park is east of the village.

History

The village is named after E. H. Harriman, former president of the Union Pacific railroad. Previously, it was known as Turner, from the early restaurant of Peter Turner.

In 1950 Harriman had a population of 676. ["Columbia-Lippincott Gazeteer", p. 760]

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 2,252 people, 927 households, and 588 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,295.6 people per square mile (887.2/km²). There were 958 housing units at an average density of 976.6/sq mi (377.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 81.71% White, 4.80% African American, 0.31% Native American, 7.37% Asian, 2.40% from other races, and 3.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.90% of the population.

There were 927 households out of which 35.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.10.

In the village the population was spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 38.2% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 9.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $60,089, and the median income for a family was $63,631. Males had a median income of $46,875 versus $41,280 for females. The per capita income for the village was $25,414. About 2.2% of families and 2.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and 6.0% of those age 65 or over.
