Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital

Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital

The Hospital derived its name from Joseph Brant, a Mohawk Indian who was a renowned political figure in the early history of Thayendanegea region. The Joseph Brant Hospital stands on part of the land which was owned by him.

JBMH is located in Burlington, Ontario and opened on February 1, 1961, with 228 beds. In 1971, the Hospital expanded to 450 beds. In 1996 due to a major hospital restructuring occurring in Ontario, the Hospital contracted to 273 beds and in 2006 reduced to 256 beds. The Hospital now serves a population of 150,000 with those beds whereas in 1971 Burlington had fewer than 75,000 citizens.

Throughout its history, Joseph Brant has never wavered from its mission to be the finest possible full-service, acute care community Hospital. On either an inpatient or outpatient basis (or both), Joseph Brant offer six distinct categories of patient care: medical services, surgical services, maternal and child care services, emergency and ambulatory services, rehabilitation and geriatric services and mental health services.

In 2007, the Hospital: has 1,400 employees, 210 physicians, and over 500 volunteers; serves 45,000 people annually in its Emergency Department; perform 13,000 surgical procedures yearly; is the birthing place for 1,700 babies each year, and has 165,000 patient visits per year (inpatient and outpatient).

JBMH has a huge geographic catchment area in the Halton and Hamilton-Wentworth Regions; about a quarter million people reside in this area which includes parts of Flamborough Township, the City of Hamilton, and Stoney Creek and all of Burlington and Waterdown.

JBMH is known as a great place to work for health professionals and was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers from 2001 to 2003.
