*January 1: Wim Deetman resigns as mayor of The Hague.
*January 12: Two soldiers of Task Force Uruzgan, Lance Corporal Aldert Poortema (22) and Private First Class Wesley Schol (20), both of the Regiment Infanterie Johan Willem Friso, are killed in Uruzgan, Afghanistan
*January 15: Farshad Bashir (20) of the Socialist Party is sworn in as member of the Tweede Kamer, becoming the youngest member in history.
