Pharsalia is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 542 at the 2000 census. Pharsalia is a name related to the location of Julius Caesar's victory over Pompey.

The Town of Pharsalia is an interior town of Chenango County, located in the western half of the county, northwest of the City of Norwich.

History

The town received its first settler in 1797. Pharsalia was founded from part of the Town of Norwich in 1806, but was then called the "Town of Stonington." In 1808, the town was renamed "Pharsalia."

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 39.1 square miles (101.3 km²), of which, 38.8 square miles (100.6 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (0.74%) is water.

New York State Route 23 is an east-west highway through the town.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 542 people, 200 households, and 154 families residing in the town. The population density was 14.0 people per square mile (5.4/km²). There were 333 housing units at an average density of 8.6/sq mi (3.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.71% White, 0.55% African American, 0.18% Native American, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.74% of the population.

There were 200 households out of which 40.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the town the population was spread out with 29.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 109.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,417, and the median income for a family was $37,917. Males had a median income of $25,833 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,752. About 19.0% of families and 22.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
