The University of Texas at Tyler was founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed Texas Eastern University in 1975, and then joined the
University of Texas System in 1979. Initially, UT Tyler was a "senior" level university, teaching only upper division undergraduate (juniors & seniors) and graduate level classes, granting bachelors and masters degrees. In 1997, with the addition of lower division (freshmen & sophomore) classes, UT Tyler became an institution following the full U.S. university pattern, i.e. educating students from the freshman level through graduate and postgraduate levels.Campus
