Misunderstandings

The similar spelling of "butte" and "butt" can lead to some amusing situations. In 2007, the Indigenous Sculpture Society, which creates sculptures inspired by towns with unusual names, went to Elephant Butte intending to build a monument from elephant dung. Mayor Bob Barnes then had to point out their mistake; "I had to explain... what a butte is."
