Larissa Lai (born 1967) is a Canadian writer.
Born in La Jolla,
California , she grew up in St. John's, Newfoundland. She attended theUniversity of British Columbia and, in 1990, graduated with aB.A. inSociology . Subsequently, she earned her MA from theUniversity of East Anglia , and her PhD from the University of Calgary (2006). She is currently an Assistant Professor in English at the University of British Columbia.Her first novel, "
When Fox is a Thousand " (1995) was shortlised for the 1996Books in Canada First Novel Award , and her second, "salt fish girl " was published in 2002.From 1997 to 1998 she was the Writer in Residence at the
Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program at theUniversity of Calgary , and she held a similar position as writer-in-residence atSimon Fraser University in 2006. She completed herPhD at Calgary in July 2006, and has been awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at UBC.Lai has been announced as one of the instructors at the 2007 Clarion West
