"The Dartmouth" (informally known as "The D"), is the student newspaper at Dartmouth College and the campus’s only daily. Completely student-run and independent of Dartmouth College, “The D” can trace its year of origination to 1839, making it America’s oldest college newspaper.

The Dartmouth is published by The Dartmouth, Inc., an independent, nonprofit corporation chartered in the state of New Hampshire. All editorial and business decisions are made by the students without any interference from the College.

The newspaper is published daily, Monday through Friday, from September to June, except during examination periods and vacations. In addition to the regular newspaper, The Dartmouth publishes two weekly supplements, Big Green Sports Weekly on Mondays and The Dartmouth Mirror, The D’s weekly magazine, on Fridays. The print edition is free to students on campus.

To take advantage of Dartmouth’s unique summer quarter, The Dartmouth publishes Tuesday and Friday during the summer months. Special issues are published for major College events, including Homecoming, Winter Carnival, Green Key Weekend and Commencement. The annual Freshman Issue is sent to all incoming students every August.

In addition to all the stories, opinions and photographs found in the daily issues of The Dartmouth, the online edition features breaking news, special photographs and web-specific sections such as “Ask the Editors.”

Although its web site [http://www.thedartmouth.com/aboutus.php] claims that it began publication in 1799, there are questions as to whether or not those college newspapers published at Dartmouth are connected with the D. "The Dartmouth" currently (2006) states that it is in its 163rd volume. (Miami University in Oxford, Ohio's student newspaper, The Miami Student, claims to be the oldest campus newspaper in America, established in 1826. [ [http://www.miamistudent.net/ The Miami Student] ] [Miami University, 1809] ); However, this statement has been proved false by Miami University archivists.

The editors of "The Dartmouth" described its origins in the 1928 Aegis:

“Humbly founded in 1839, in a period during which campus publications of questionable character were mushrooming and withering almost every day, "The Dartmouth" of former days found itself hard pressed to maintain a foothold in the maelstrom of campus life. The tottering paper was forced out of existence after its first five years of publication, but was revived in 1867.”

Special editions are also printed for such events as Homecoming weekend, Winter Carnival, Green Key Weekend, and Commencement, and a special freshman issue is sent to all incoming students. Additionally, the college Humor Society, the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, does an annual parody of the paper. "The Dartmouth" once required paid subscriptions, but has been provided to Dartmouth students free of charge since 2001.

During the New Hampshire primary, "The Dartmouth" is known for its interviews with the presidential candidates.

Famous alumni of "The Dartmouth" include Susan Dentzer, "New York Times" reporter Jacques Steinberg, Paul Gigot, Mort Kondracke and ABC News journalist Jake Tapper.
