She debuted in 1964 after being discovered by country artist, Bill Anderson in 1963, and signed a recording contract with RCA Victor Records in Nashville, Tennessee.[1] Connie Smith released her debut single, "Once a Day" in August 1964, which reached #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, spending eight weeks in the top position, making it the longest-running to remain at #1 by a female country artist. Her self-titled debut album was released in March 1965 and spent 30 weeks on the Top Country Albums chart, also reaching #1.[2]
Smith had an additional 15 Top 10 hits under RCA Victor, including 1969's "You and Your Sweet Love," 1970's "I Never Once Stopped Loving You," and 1972's "If It Ain't Love (Let's Leave It Alone)." Signing with Columbia Records in 1973, Smith recorded more Gospel material, and focused more on religion, therefore her chart success declined, having only Top 10 hits under the label: "Ain't Loved a Good Thing" and "(Till) I Kissed You."[1] Between 1977 and 1979, she recorded for Monument Records, which produced two LP's and one Top 20 single, a cover of Andy Gibb's "I Just Want to Be Your Everything." However, her further singles for the label charted outside of the Top 40 and she left the label shortly afterward.[3] In 1985, she briefly recorded for Epic, but returned to family life and did not release an album until 1993's Live In Branson, Missouri, USA, and then a self-titled album for Warner Bros. Records in 1998.
Connie Smith's singles have accounted for 20 Top 10 hits and 29 Top 20 hits, three of which reached #1 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart. In addition, three of her first four studio albums reached #1 on the Top Country Albums chart, and six in total reaching the Top 10 that albums chart. Thirdly, Smith collaborated with Nat Stuckey in 1969 and 1970 for two LP's which released two singles. In 2003, she released a Gospel album with country artists, Barbara Fairchild and Sharon White entitled, Love Never Fails.
