Higginsville is a city in Lafayette County, Missouri, United States. The population was 4,682 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Higginsville is located at coor dms|39|4|8|N|93|43|20|W|city (39.068829, -93.722126)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.7 square miles (9.6 km²), of which, 3.7 square miles (9.5 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.54%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,682 people, 1,778 households, and 1,175 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,270.6 people per square mile (491.2/km²). There were 1,946 housing units at an average density of 528.1/sq mi (204.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 91.56% White, 5.28% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.68% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.50% of the population.

There were 1,778 households out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 12.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 29.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 83.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,497, and the median income for a family was $40,511. Males had a median income of $31,291 versus $21,596 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,982. About 7.1% of families and 8.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.5% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.

Ancestries were German 34.8%, Irish 10.7%, English 10.1%, United States 9.2%, French 3.1%, Scotch 2.3%.fact|date=January 2008

History

Higginsville was founded in 1869 by Harvey Higgins which is how it got its name. Higginsville has always had a strong farming heritage.
