Plainview, Nebraska has made a name for itself as the "Klown Kapital" of the world, boasting a Klown Festival every June and a Klown Doll Museum with more than 2,500 pieces collected over the past number of years. The Klown Doll Museum can be viewed on-line at www.plvwtelco.net/clowndollmuseum/. Plainview also has two structures on the National Historical Register -- the Foy George Memorial Band Shell and the Plainview Historical Society's railroad depot building. Plainview also has an original Carnegie Library that is still in use and two Sears Catalog Homes as part of its history. The site of Plainview's first sod house is also locateable and on City land.
Geocaching is also available in Plainview, with at least one course set up to tour sites of interest.The Plainview News is the town's only newspaper, is run by perhaps Nebraska's youngest publisher (at 25 he purchased the business after starting as editor at 24) and is also viewable on-line at www.plvwtelco.net/plvwnews. Plainview has an open-forum type website as well at www.in-plainview.com.
Plainview has two large industry-type businesses, the first, SiDump'r Trailer Co. which manufactures a special type of trailers and the town also claims Husker Ag L.L.C. a community-owned ethanol plant.
Communications: Plainview is served by an Indepentdent Telephone Co. and has state of the art fiber optics throughout the city. Plainview, Ne. holds the distinction of being the first 100% FTTP (Fiber Optics to every resident and Business)City in Nebraska.
The City of Plainview is broken up into a number of departments, like the Hospital, Manor, Assisted Living, Library, Swimming Pool, Parks, Recreation, Tree and Housing Authority boards that keep the town running. The City of Plainview owns and operates (through the Health Services Board) the Plainview Hospital and Plainview Manor.
The City Council is a four-person council with a Mayor position. Each are four-year term positions with a rotating schedule of term-limits.
Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 1,353 people, 588 households, and 362 families residing in the city, making it the second largest city inPierce County afterPierce, Nebraska . Thepopulation density was 1,249.1 people per square mile (483.7/km²). There were 656 housing units at an average density of 605.6/sq mi (234.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.71% White, 0.15% African American, 1.03% Native American, 0.44% Asian, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.There were 588 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.4% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.3% were non-families. 36.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.22 and the average family size was 2.92.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 28.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 86.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.0 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,056, and the median income for a family was $35,625. Males had a median income of $28,516 versus $21,979 for females. The
per capita income for the city was $15,814. About 8.0% of families and 13.4% of the population were below thepoverty line , including 15.7% of those under age 18 and 15.4% of those age 65 or over.References
