Orleans is a village in Harlan County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 425 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Orleans is located at 40°07′54″N 99°27′20″W / 40.131620°N 99.455519°W / 40.131620; -99.455519 (40.131620, -99.455519).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 425 people, 203 households, and 119 families residing in the village. The population density was 701.9 people per square mile (269.0/km2). There were 240 housing units at an average density of 396.4 per square mile (151.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.82% White, 0.24% Native American, 0.24% Asian, and 0.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.18% of the population.

There were 203 households out of which 20.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% were non-families. 36.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.09 and the average family size was 2.68.

In the village the population was spread out with 18.6% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 20.5% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 27.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 49 years. For every 100 females there were 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $25,179, and the median income for a family was $28,056. Males had a median income of $25,208 versus $16,875 for females. The per capita income for the village was $13,015. About 16.9% of families and 16.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.8% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.

Brief Facts

Orleans once contained the world's largest creamery. It is a small farm community. The village consists of a library, a bank, three restaurants, a gas station, a store, a swimming pool, and a car shop called Hillbilly Hot Rodz and also a mobile glass business called White's Auto Glass. Hunting season is one of the busiest times of the year for the small town. Orleans is also known for Apple Fest and the Harlan County Fair.
