nihongo|Rose|ローズ|Rōzu is a video game character created by Capcom. First introduced in "Street Fighter Alpha", she is a recurring playable character in the "Street Fighter" series of fighting games. Rose is a fortune teller who left her homeland of Genoa after she sensed that Doomsday was approaching. Her main adversary is M. Bison (Vega in Japan), an evil individual who is the cause of Rose's grim premonitions. In battle, Rose wields a pure energy known as Soul Power, which stands opposite to Bison's signature Psycho Power.

History

Rose came into being at an unspecified point in the past, the result of M. Bison's attempts to master the evil energy known as Psycho Power. In order to hone his telekinesis, Bison chose to discard what he viewed as the 'weak' parts of his soul. These fragments later reformed into Rose, the physical embodiment of Bison's 'good' half. Rose's first appearance occurs in "Street Fighter Alpha", as she searches the world for Bison in order to eradicate his evil power. At the end of the game, Rose engages Bison in combat and seemingly kills him. However, in the ending of "Street Fighter Alpha 2", Rose consults her tarot cards and learns that Bison survived the attack. At the climactic moment of "Street Fighter Alpha 3", she faces Bison once more and rams her fist through his chest, channeling her energy into his body. As Bison grapples with Rose, he reveals that they both share half of "the same soul". In the end, Rose is outmatched by Bison and collapses from exhaustion. Soon afterward, she is recovered by Guy and taken to safety. [ [http://www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/c/sfa3rose.htm Ending for "Street Fighter Alpha 3" - Rose] . [http://www.vgmuseum.com/ VGMuseum] . Retrieved on 2008-4-9.] Although it appears that Bison has been killed, he has actually transferred his consciousness into Rose, effectively reclaiming her body.

In the interim between the "Alpha" series and "", Bison remains inside Rose's body until his scientists can form a new (albeit weaker) one for him. Bison appears as the final boss of "Street Fighter II", though Rose's ultimate fate is left ambiguous.

Characteristics

Rose is a slender woman with a long black ponytail and violet-colored eyes. Her costume includes a stylized pink trenchcoat with large gold buttons, high-heeled shoes, a purple unitard, and an exceptionally long yellow stole. [ [http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters3/rose.html Rose] . [http://www.fightersgeneration.com/ The Fighter's Generation] . Retrieved on 2008-4-2.] Her sprite animations depict her ponytail being blown behind her by a harsh wind, even in calm weather. Retrieved on 2008-4-2.] As one of her victory poses, Rose magically swaps her outfit for a red ball gown with a key-shaped choker; she is also depicted in this attire during an ending sequence in "Street Fighter Alpha 2". In the UDON "Street Fighter" comic book series, Rose is often depicted wearing a similar gown outside of battle.

Though physically weak, Rose is a capable fighter when employing her Soul Power. Her seemingly-innocuous scarf is actually a weapon; Rose channels her Soul Power into the scarf whenever she attacks, transforming it into a glowing, whip-like stream of energy. While throwing a punch, the scarf wraps itself around her arm in a drill bit-type manner. By using "Soul Reflect", the scarf can also deflect projectiles thrown by her opponents.

In other media

"Street Fighter"

Rose makes a cameo appearance in an episode of the first season of the American "Street Fighter" animated series titled "The Medium is the Message" as a competitor in a Street Fighter tournament in India among other "Street Fighter Alpha" characters. She has a more prominent role in the second season episode "The Flame and the Rose", where she teams up with Ken and Blanka to fight against Bison.

Rose also plays a major role in the 1995 manga adaptation of "Street Fighter Alpha" by Masahiko Nakahira, where she is a soothsayer who guides Ryu in his quest to control the Dark Hadou. She plays a similar role in the 1999 "" OVA.

UDON Comics

In the "Street Fighter" comic produced by UDON in close collaboration with Capcom, it is told that Rose was a member of a tribe of Roma (a.k.a. Gypsies) that followed a white haired woman known only as Master. The woman had a glowing yellow lightning bolt on her forehead and a very similar hairstyle to Rose. When Rose was a child (roughly ten years of age), M. Bison, a former student of the Master, returned to the tribe and declared that he was going to kill Master, as her knowledge of Soul Power was a threat to him. Though Master fought bravely, Bison's Psycho Power (corrupted Soul Power) ultimately killed her and almost every other person present in the village. Only a man who was away chopping wood away from the village survived. He returned after the explosion and discovered an unconscious Rose who now bore Master's Lightning bolt on her forehead (events in "Street Fighter #1").

In "Street Fighter #2", Cammy was tracking Ken and Ryu in San Francisco where she was intercepted by Rose. Later, Rose completely cleansed Cammy of the Psycho Power's influence and erased her brainwashing. She later deposited Cammy on the doorstep of the British Embassy in Italy where her instinctual response to a terrorist attack directly led to her being recruited to Delta Red, the organization she works for in Super Street Fighter II. Rose is distressed when Cammy, under the employ of MI5, not only returns to a life of violence but also engages in missions that will inevitably lead her back to Bison.

"Namco x Capcom"

Like Lilith, Rose is firstly introduced as an enemy to the heroes' team. She is told to be a servant of Black Valkyrie, much to disbelief of Ryu, as he knows Rose was good and had died. She doesn't speak much and keep attacking the heroes' team in any occasions together with the deceased Armor King and Judas. It's until a stage where Valkyrie uses her holy power and the Golden Seed to purify their soul. For a while, she, Judas, and Armor King just disappeared.

Until then, in later stage, she comes back and becomes playable. Her soul is purified, and Rose reveals that after she died, Black Valkyrie had revived her. After the purifying, she attacks Vega, but she fails as she couldn't penetrate Vega's Psycho Power. With the Psycho Power, Vega remains undamaged (and the player couldn't damage Vega at this state). When Ryu regains his conscience back from his "Killer Hadou" state, Vega tries to strike him again but counter-attacked with the Shin Shou Ryu Ken, making him vulnerable to attacks and would take damage after that.

In the game's ending, Rose is told to be resting in peace in the Realm of Spirit, as also is Armor King.

Actresses

*Rose has been voiced by three "seiyuu": Yuko Miyamura in "Street Fighter Alpha" and "Alpha 2", and Michiko Neya in "Street Fighter Alpha 3". In "", she was voiced by Ai Orikasa in the Japanese version.

Promotion and reception

IGN ranked Rose at number twenty in their "Top 25 Street Fighter Characters" article, noting her "bizarre" background story as an example of "classic weirdness", as well as her "unique gameplay".
