Center is a city in Ralls County, Missouri, United States. The population was 644 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Hannibal Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Center is located at coor dms|39|30|33|N|91|31|43|W|city (39.509267, -91.528566)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 644 people, 251 households, and 161 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,621.4 people per square mile (621.6/km²). There were 309 housing units at an average density of 778.0/sq mi (298.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.91% White, 0.16% African American, 0.47% Native American, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.

There were 251 households out of which 33.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 24.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $21,964, and the median income for a family was $27,125. Males had a median income of $26,944 versus $17,955 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,598. About 24.0% of families and 26.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 36.4% of those under age 18 and 31.1% of those age 65 or over.
