Westphalia is a city in Osage County, Missouri, United States. The population was 320 at the 2000 census. Westphalia is heavily influenced by the German heritage of the majority of its inhabitants. Many of the early settlers of the area came from the Westphalen area of Germany, hence the name. Many buildings are influenced by nineteenth century German architecture, and streets are labeled in both English and German. The center of population of Missouri is located in Westphalia [http://www.census.gov/geo/www/cenpop/statecenters.txt] .

Westphalia is located at coor dms|38|26|25|N|91|59|52|W|city (38.440207, -91.997887)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 320 people, 137 households, and 84 families residing in the city. The population density was 631.9 people per square mile (242.3/km²). There were 152 housing units at an average density of 300.1/sq mi (115.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.81% White, 0.31% African American, and 1.88% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.62% of the population.

There were 137 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% were married couples living together, 12.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% were non-families. 35.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $35,833, and the median income for a family was $47,500. Males had a median income of $35,568 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,496. About 1.3% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 27.1% of those age 65 or over.
