Pevely is a city in Jefferson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 3,768 at the 2000 census. Charles S. Rankin founded the city in 1860; the origin of the name is unknown.

Geography

Pevely is located at coor dms|38|17|2|N|90|23|49|W|city (38.283894, -90.397022)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.4 square miles (8.9 km²), of which, 3.3 square miles (8.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (2.63%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,768 people, 1,411 households, and 1,008 families residing in the city. As of 2006, the city boasts almost 4,400 in population. The population density was 1,133.7 people per square mile (438.2/km²). There were 1,482 housing units at an average density of 445.9/sq mi (172.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.89% White, 1.59% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.29% from other races, and 1.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.93% of the population.

There were 1,411 households out of which 40.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 16.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 23.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the city the population was spread out with 30.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,916, and the median income for a family was $37,288. Males had a median income of $32,301 versus $20,673 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,403. About 19.7% of families and 19.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.7% of those under age 18 and 19.5% of those age 65 or over.

Zion Lutheran Church was founded in 1918 as a member of what is now known as the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. The first church building was constructed in 1919 across the street from where the current building stands. The current church building was constructed in 1981 with the belfry being added in 1993 in celebration of Zion’s 75th anniversary. The church is currently ongoing another construction project to add a new gabled roof which will raise the ceiling and the church has plans to add a balcony in the future and is nearing completion.

Attractions

I-55 Raceway is a high-banked 1/3 mile high banked dirt oval that features racing on Saturday nights. U.M.P. DIRTcar Late Models, U.M.P. DIRTcar Modifieds, U.M.P. DIRTcar/A.A.R.A. Sportsman and U.M.P. DIRTcar/A.A.R.A Pro 4 Stocks headline the weekly racing program. Famous international racers, such as Dale Earnhardt Jr., can be seen sometimes on NASCAR nights. [http://www.pevelyfleamarket.com/ Pevely Flea Market] , which originally was the Sixty One South Drive-In one of the largest drive-in movie theaters around until the 80's, is now the largest flea market in the Mid-West. It features inside booths (called the "Marketplace"), as well as outside boothes and shops. But as of late, they have started charging people go inside from their supposed lack of profits, and the number of people going there are decreasing.

Pevely Fall Festival now called The Homecoming Festival will be held August 22, 2008 from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM and August 23, 2008 from 11:00 AM - 10:00 PM. The event as usual, will be held at Pevely City Park 1 on County Road. Rides will be featured, as well as booths and games. Traditionally the Fall Festival has taken place on the 4th Friday-Saturday of September. Weather, particularly rain, has been an issue in years past, and is one of the reasons it has been switched to August.
