Highway 48 is a King's highway in Southern Ontario stretching from Markham, Ontario northward to near Beaverton in the township of Brock, Ontario.

Before downloading in 1998, Highway 48 extended from Highway 401 in Toronto to Highway 35 in Coboconk with a total length of 128 km.

History

Highway 48 began as an unpaved road on March 24, 1937 at 9.6 km and was paved in 1947. In 1954 it was extended to 82 km to connect to Port Bolster by the Department of Highways (with gravel sections). In 1962, it was extended to the former Highway 46 (now York Regional Road 40) at Bolsover with a length of 100 km. A bypass was built to Beaverton and the final 28 km was added in 1975.

The Toronto section (from Highway 401 to Steeles Avenue) is now known as Markham Road. The York Region section (from Steeles Avenue to York Regional Road 73) was renamed York Regional Road 68.

The Kawartha Lakes section (from Highway 12 to Highway 35) is now known as Portage Road and Durham Regional Highway 48.

Highway 48's concurrent section with Highway 12 prior to 1998 is designated as a Trans-Canada Highway route.
