Canby is a city in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,903 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Edward Canby, a General in the United States Army.The town is also known very well for its high school wrestling, their team has won 8 state championships, last one coming in 2006.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²), of which, 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²) of it is land and 0.46% is water.

U.S. Route 75 and Minnesota State Highway 68 are two of the main routes in the city. Minnesota State Highway 67 is in close proximity to the city.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there are 1,903 people, 842 households, and 453 families residing in the city. The population density is 876.5 people per square mile (338.6/km²). There are 918 housing units at an average density of 422.8/sq mi (163.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.48% White, 0.21% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.32% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 842 households out of which 22.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 46.1% are non-families. 41.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.08 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 19.5% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 30.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $27,533, and the median income for a family is $38,674. Males have a median income of $25,952 versus $20,282 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,269. 13.5% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 15.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
