He currently represents the electoral district of Cape Breton South in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. He is a member of the Liberals.
MacDonald is a former Sea Cadet officer, and he retired with the rank of lieutenant[citation needed].
He previously served as mayor of Sydney from 1978 to 1993, the longest-serving mayor in that city's history[citation needed]. During his time as Mayor, he worked hard to revitalize the waterfront of the city[citation needed]. He is especially proud of having the boardwalk and Centre 200 constructed during his tenure as Mayor[citation needed].
MacDonald was first elected to the Assembly in the 1993 election. He has been re-elected in every subsequent election. He served in a few ministerial post during the Liberal Governments of the 1990s. He is the current House Leader of the Liberal Party.
MacDonald’s education background includes St. Francis Xavier College, the University College of Cape Breton and Dalhousie University.[citation needed]
He is married to Ann MacDonald of Sydney. He is a father and a grandfather.
