Beginning

Sugarman’s first professional gig came at the age of 18 when he was asked to fill in for a DJ who was unable to arrive for the beginning of his shift at the Burvale Hotel in Springvale, Victoria. What began as an hour-long opening session turned into the main event when the resident DJ failed to turn up that evening. The shift resulted in a full-time gig as a dance music DJ.Fact|date=June 2008 Sugarman went on to work at Melbourne clubs, including Chevron, The Underground and JOOCE.

DJ World

As a young DJ, Sugarman in 1989 co-founded the Melbourne Metropolitan Disc Jockey Association, an organization consisting of the area’s most prominent DJs. The group focused on both raising the profiles of and benefits to its members. After establishing himself in Australia, Sugarman took his career to North America, making a brief stop in Canada before moving to New York.Fact|date=June 2008
