Newsome is the principal songwriter.

Gallagher described the band's musical influences as "a cross between The Stones, Neil Young and The Band"; other influences include Bob Dylan, Faces, Merle Haggard and Mott the Hoople.

Proud Mary's debut album, 'The Same Old Blues', went Gold in June 2001. The band parted with Sour Mash in 2003, and released their second album, "Love and Light", with Redemption Records (owned by Gaz Whelan of the Happy Mondays) in 2004. This album was also well received. The band has toured with Neil Young, The Black Crowes, and Ryan Adams and has played at several major music festivals.

Proud Mary eventually broke up; in 2007 Greg Griffin released a solo record, "Glass Bottom Boat", and toured Europe; Paul Newsome wrote film soundtracks in Los Angeles; Terry Kirkbride joined Oasis to play percussion; and Nev Cottee worked as a late night eclectic radio D.J. on Revolution FM in Oldham.

The band reunited in 2008, recording a new album and planning to tour.
