Texas Charter Township, officially named the Charter Township of Texas, is a charter township of Kalamazoo County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 10,919. It encompasses the entire portion of the survey township T3S R12W.

The township encompasses two major highway trunklines: I-94 and US-131 (which actually only borders along the eastern boundary with the City of Portage). The township wholly contains the Al Sabo Preserve, which straddles Portage Creek through southwestern Kalamazoo County.

The Texas Township Campus of Kalamazoo Valley Community College is located on the southern side of West O Avenue, just east of 8th Street South in section 11 of T3S R12W.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 36.3 square miles (94.1 km²), of which, 34.5 square miles (89.2 km²) of it is land and 1.9 square miles (4.9 km²) of it (5.20%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 10,919 people, 3,879 households, and 3,134 families residing in the township. The population density was 316.9 per square mile (122.4/km²). There were 4,053 housing units at an average density of 117.6/sq mi (45.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 94.30% White, 1.51% African American, 0.17% Native American, 2.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.13% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.56% of the population.

There were 3,879 households out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.0% were married couples living together, 5.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 14.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the township, the population was spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 7.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $69,854, and the median income for a family was $78,986. Males had a median income of $58,476 versus $35,285 for females. The per capita income for the township was $32,151. About 2.1% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
