History
Mashpee High School opened its doors in 1996. Prior to its opening, Mashpee students attended nearby Falmouth High School. Mashpee voted to open its own high school after the town had seen an extremely fast increase in its student population. Since 1990, Mashpee's town population has almost tripled in size and is one of the state's fastest growing towns. The current town population stands at, approximately, 16,000 and the student population at roughly 2,200. Over the past few years the principal has changed many times, and the high school's principal is currently Ms. Jane Day. Mashpee High School originally served sudents in grades 7–12, but in 2008 the school board decided to separate high school students from the 7th & 8th grade students. Mashpee High School now serves students in grades 9–12, and the 7th and 8th grade students attend Mashpee Middle School which is located within Mashpee High School, but runs under its own administration, teachers, and has separate sports teams.
Of the approximately 700 students at Mashpee High, 8.2% of the student population is Native American, the highest percentage in New England.[1]
Athletics
Mashpee offers a wide variety of interscholastic sports. It is known for having very competitive football, basketball, and field hockey teams. The football team has also had the honor of having the highest rated defense (Points Against Average) in the state twice, in 2006 and 2008. Mashpee is part of the MIAA. Mashpee is affiliated with the South Shore League, which competes in Division III & IV athletics and comprises Mashpee High School, Carver High School, Hull High School, Harwich High School, Norwell High School, Cohasset High School, Rockland High School, Abington High School, and East Bridgewater High School. Before joining the South Shore League, Mashpee was part of the Patriot League. Also, the boy's and girl's winter track teams compete in the Eastern Athletic Conference.
Football
Their main rivals are Harwich High School, Abington High School and Sandwich High School. Other rivals are Cape Cod Regional Technical High School and Cohasset High School. Mashpee plays Sandwich High School on the annual Thanksgiving Day football game. From 1998–2003, they played neighboring Sandwich High School on Thanksgiving. Both teams dropped the rivalry after 2003 due to Sandwich being a much larger school than Mashpee, and also to the lack of competitiveness. Before the rivalry ended, each team has won against each other 3 times. From 2004–2009 Mashpee played Cape Cod Regional Technical High School on Thanksgiving. They never lost a game to Cape Cod Tech, and after the 2009 season, the two teams discontinued the rivalry due to lack of competitiveness and Mashpee has since renewed their Thanksgiving rivalry with Sandwich. After the football team went through back-to-back win-less seasons in 2000 and 2001, and from the years 2000–2004 had a record of 6-42-2, Matt Triveri took over as football coach. In his first year at the helm, they went 6–4. Since 2005, The football team has an overall record of 51–16. In the 2008 season, Mashpee recorded their best season in school history by going 10-1 and was ranked by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald as the #17 and #15 team in the state, which solidified Mashpee as a powerhouse football team in Southeastern Massachusetts. Coach Matt Triveri has become one of the most respected coaches in Massachusetts and is a 3-time South Shore League Coach of the Year, 4-time Cape & Islands Coach of the Year, and was recently honored as the New England Patriots High School Coach of the Week in 2009. The team has competed in 3 South Shore League championship games (2006, 2007, 2008), had the honor of having the highest rated defense (points against average) in the state twice (in 2006 and 2008), and has also sent multiple players to Division I, II and III colleges for football. On November 11, 2011...The Mashpee Football team played in it's 4th South Shore League Championship Game since 2006 against powerhouse East Bridgewater. Both teams came into the contest with undefeated records at 9-0. East Bridgewater came in with highly touted running back Casey DeAndrade, who at the beginning of the season signed his letter-of-intent to play football at the University of New Hampshire, a Division 1-AA powerhouse football program, under a scholarship from UNH. Mashpee made history at the end of the night by defeating East Bridgewater, 16-6 and clinching it's first SOuth Shore League Championship and also it's first trip to the MIAA D-IV State Playoffs. Mashpee will face Millis-Hopedale in the first round of the MIAA D-IV Playoffs on November 29, 2011 at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School, for a chance to play for the MIAA D-IV State Championship at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The 2011 Season was also the first season in which Mashpee finished with an Undefeated Regular Season Record (11-0)
Field Hockey
The school is also known for having a very strong field hockey team. During the 2004 season, the team posted a record 16 shutouts in a 20 game season and ultimately made it to the state semi-finals, losing 3–1 to a team from Canton, whom eventually won the Division 3 State Championship.
Basketball
During the early 2000s, the boys basketball team was regarded as one of the best Division IV programs in the state. The basketball team reached the Division IV State semi-finals in 2000 and 2001 after winning their sectional and regional brackets. Since then, the basketball team has reached the South Regional semi-finals twice in 2005 and 2008, losing both times to state powerhouse Cathedral High School of Boston, whom Mashpee has developed a post-season rivalry with recently. Cathedral eventually went on to win the Division IV state title in both those years.
During the 2010-2011 basketball season, the team rolled through the regular season and is having the best season in the 15-year history of Mashpee High School. The boy's basketball team finished with a regular season record of 18-3. The team has claimed at least a share of the South Shore League Championship. School Achievements
Mashpee High School is home to the first and only high school chapter of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE.) The group works closely with the Stonehill College SMPTE organization. The group traveled to Los Angeles, CA to attend the annual SMPTE Tech Conference & Expo as honored guests. The group has also been invited to Hong Kong, China as a result of their achievements in the organization. The advisor of the group is Arthur Joia, Media Arts Director at Mashpee High School.
The Mashpee High School Concert Choir, the schools primary choral group, is a three-time gold medal winning choir.
The Mashpee High School Human Rights Club was instrumental in drafting legislation for the recent Massachusetts "Anti-Bully" Bill that passed the state house and senate unanimously. The MHS Human Rights Club worked alongside former Rep. Patrick (Barnstable District) in drafting a bill that would create a No Name Calling Day each year. This was done before discussion of the Anti-Bully Bill had even started at the State House in Boston. That bill was dead in committee and they were successful in including it as an amendment to the overall Anti-Bully Bill. Therefore, the 4th Wednesday of every January is No Name Calling Day in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: A day to educate and inform the public on the effects of bullying and disrespect.
