Renewable energy in Spain

Spain as a whole has the target of generating 30% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2010, with half of that amount coming from wind power. In 2006, 20% of the total electricity demand was already produced with renewable energy sources.

Some autonomous regions in Spain lead Europe in the use of renewable energy technology, and plan to reach 100% renewable energy generation in a few years (objetive "all electricity from renewable sources, AERS). Castile and León and Galicia are especially near this goal, producing in 2006 70% of their total electricity demand from renewable energy sources, and 5 communities produces more than 50% from renewables.

If nuclear power is also considered, two autonomous communities in Spain have already managed to produce their total electricity demand in 2006 completely free of CO2 emissions: Extremadura and Castile-La Mancha [http://www.ree.es/cap07/pdf/infosis/Inf_Sis_Elec_REE_2006.pdf] Red Eléctrica de España Annual Report 2006] , although nuclear energy is not considered CO2 free source by environmentalists. In any case, Extremadura is the biggest incresing generator of renewable energy and in the future can displace nuclear energy by renewable energy. Also Castile-La Mancha is one of the biggest renewable energy producers in Spain and is increasing its share. Spain is one of the three world’s largest users of wind power with an installed capacity of 15,515 MW at January 2008.cite web | url=http://www.energias-renovables.com/paginas/Contenidosecciones.asp?ID=14&Cod=12262&Tipo=&Nombre=Noticias | title=España instala en 2007 más megavatios eólicos que nunca] In 2007, wind farms accounted for almost 10% of the electricity generated in Spain. In 2005 Spain became the first country in the world to require the installation of photovoltaic electricity generation in new buildings, and the second in the world (after Israel) to require the installation of solar hot water systems [ [http://www.ren21.net/globalstatusreport/download/RE_GSR_2006_Update.pdf Layout 1 ] ] .
