3 December 1909 in Western Australia, and died on24 April 1995 at Hobart, Tasmania. He was created a KBE in 1958, a KCVO in 1977 and a KCMG in 1981.The first Australian to hold the office, he was hugely popular as Governor, and was also National President of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.
