The archdiocese was originally established in 1825, as
Vicariate Apostolic of Alabama and the Floridas. It was erected as Diocese of Mobile, May 15, 1829. The name changed to Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham, July 9, 1954, and redesignated Diocese of Mobile, on June 28, 1969. The diocese was elevated to Archdiocese of Mobile, November 16, 1980.Ordinaries
