Mangalkot ( _bn. মঙ্গলকোট) is a town with a police station, a community development block and assembly constituency in Katwa subdivision of Barddhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

History

Damage to embankments of the Ajay and consequent flooding was a regular problem in the Ausgram and Mangalkot area. The devastating flood of 1943 caused immense suffering and lead to a mass movement for restoration/ repair of the embankments. A massive meeting was organised at Guskara in 1944, with Uday Chand Mahtab, Maharaja of Bardhaman. However, the government did not take any action. Ultimately, the Communist Party, which had been at the forefront of agitations for some years, provided a huge work force for the purpose and completed the repair work. It laid the foundation for the party’s popularity in the area. The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating latterite soil. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared. [Chattopadhyay, Akkori, pp 14-15]

Kunur, one of main tributaries of the Ajay, 112 km in length, has its origin near Bansgara in the Faridpur police station area. With water from several small streams swelling it during the monsoons, it often floods large areas of Ausgram and Mangalkot police stations. It joins the Ajay near Ujani village. Demographics

Politics

Sadhana Mallik of CPI(M) won the Mangalkot assembly seat in 2006, 2001, and 1996 defeating Abdul Based Shekh of AITC in 2006, Chandranath Mukherjee of AITC in 2001, and Absar Nurul Mondal of INC in 1996. Samar Baora of CPI(M) defeated Hriday Kishan Sar of INC in 1991. Nikhilananda Sar of CPI(M) defeated Jagadish Dutta of INC in 1987, Seikh Borshed of INC in 1982, and Madan Chowdhury of INC in 1977.
