- Hawaii hotspot
The Hawaii hotspot is perhaps the best known volcanic hotspot on
Earth , [ [http://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/dynamic/hotspots.html Hotspots (This Dynamic Earth, USGS)] Retrieved on2007-09-17 ] responsible for theHawaiian Islands in thePacific Ocean .Almost all
magma created by the hotspot isbasalt ; the Hawaiian volcanoes are constructed almost entirely of thisigneous rock or the similar coarse-grainedgabbro anddiabase . Rarely, there are igneous rocks with compositions unlike basalt, such asnephelinite . Most eruptions areHawaiian eruption s because basaltic magma is fluid compared with magmas typical in moreexplosive eruption s such as the andesitic magmas producing spectacular and dangerous eruptions around Pacific Basin margins.Over 70 million years, Hawaii hotspot eruptions have left a trail of underwater mountains across the Pacific, called the
Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain . This is a vast underwater mountain region of islands, seamount s,atoll s, shallows, banks and reefs, southeast to northwest beneath the northern Pacific. A sharp bend in the chain at 43 Ma is explained by movement of the hot spot before that time. The commonly repeated theory that the bend was caused by a change in the Pacific Plate motion has been disproved by thesea floor spreading age map of the Pacific Plate. The oldest volcano in the chain isMeiji Seamount at 82 million years, and the youngestLoihi Seamount . Maui Nui , built from sevenshield volcano es. 200,000 years ago it subsided, forming islandsMaui ,Molokai ,Lanai andKahoolawe . The most recent volcanic activity at Maui Nui was about1790 atHaleakalā . Haleakalā has been active in the last 30,000 years, producing numerous small lava flows.Hawaii is the largest and youngest island in the chain, built from five volcanoes.
Mauna Loa , comprising over half of the Big Island, is the largestshield volcano on the planet. From sea level to summit, it is over convert|4|km|mi|abbr=on|lk=on, from sea level to sea floor, convert|5|km|mi|abbr=on|lk=off. [ [http://wwwhvo.wr.usgs.gov/maunaloa/ USGS] ]References
