Callingwood, Edmonton

Callingwood is an area in west Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The city formally divides Callingwood into two neighbourhoods, Callingwood North and Callingwood South. Both neighbourhoods are discussed together in this article.

Callingwood is bounded on the west by 178 Street, on the east by 170 Street, on the north by Whitemud Drive, and on the south by Callingwood Road. Callingwood North is the portion of Callingwood north of 69 Street, while Callingwood South is the portion south of 69 Avenue.

Whitemud Drive provides good access to destinations on the south side, including: the University of Alberta, Fort Edmonton Park, and Southgate Shopping Centre. West Edmonton Mall is located a short distance to the north.

Housing

Apartments in low rise buildings with fewer than five stories account for one out every two (52%) of all residences in Callingwood at large. They account for a slightly larger proportion of residences in Callingwood south.

All apartments in high rise buildings with five or more stories account for almost one in four (22%) of all residences in Callingwood south. When combined with the residences in low rise buildings, apartments account for three out of every four residences (77%) of all residences in Callingwood South. There are no high rise buildings in Callingwood North.

Both neighbourhoods have a significant number of row houses, with row houses making up a larger proportion of the residences in Callingwood North. They account for just over one in three (36%) of residences in Callingwood North whereas they account for only one in six residences (17%) in Callingwood South.

Almost all of the single family dwellings in Callingwood are located in Callingwood North where they account for one in ten (11%) of all residences.

Both neighbourhoods have some duplexes, with duplexes accounting for approximately one residence in 20 in both neighbourhoods.

The proportion of residences in Callingwood that are rented is high, according to the 2005 municipal census, with two out of every three residences (68%) occupied by renters. Only one in three is owner occupied. The proportion of rented residences is even higher in Callingwood South, where almost three out of four (73%) residences are rented. While the proportion of residences that are rented in Callingwood North is lower, more than one in two (55%) of residences are rented.

Population Mobility

The population in Callingwood is highly mobile. According to data from the 2005 municipal census, over half the residents in both Callingwood North and Callingwood South had moved within the previous three years.

In 2005, two out of every five residents (39.5%) in Callingwood South had moved within the previous twelve months. Another one in three residents (27.4%) had moved within the previous one to three years. Only one in five residents (20.8%) had lived at the same address for at least five years. In the same year, one in four residents (26.0%) in Callingwood North had moved within the previous twelve months. Another one in four (26.2%) had moved within the previous one to three years. chools and Sports Facilities

There are two schools in Callingwood North. Callingwood Elementary School is operated by the Edmonton Public School System. Archbishop Oscar Romero High School is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System.

There are three schools in Callingwood South. The Our Lady of the Prairies Catholic Elementary School is operated by the Edmonton Catholic School System. The Talmud Torah Elementary Junior High School is a Jewish school operated by the Talmud Torah Society in partnershio with the Edmonton Public School System that provides "an integrated program of Judaic and Secular studies in a Hebrew Bilingual setting focused on excellence in learning and achievement. Callingwood Arena is located in Callingwood North.
