Wilson is a city in Ellsworth County, Kansas, United States. The population was 799 at the 2000 census. Wilson was incorporated in 1883.

Wilson is notable for its large Czech population and its yearly Czech festival. It also features the "Czech Opera House," and more than one hotel including the "Historic Midland Hotel." The town promotes itself as the "Czech Capital of Kansas".

Until recently, the town had a local weekly newspaper, "The Wilson World", owned by the same publisher as the "Ellsworth County Independent/Reporter".

Geography

Wilson is located at coor dms|38|49|32|N|98|28|29|W|city (38.825619, -98.474748)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.

Wilson is 2 miles south of I-70. Wilson Lake (the clearest lake in Kansas) is located 5 miles north of here.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 799 people, 333 households, and 205 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,436.7 people per square mile (550.9/km²). There were 406 housing units at an average density of 730.0/sq mi (279.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.87% White, 0.13% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.13% of the population.

There were 333 households out of which 27.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.6% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.4% were non-families. 35.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 21.5% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 28.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,821, and the median income for a family was $47,768. Males had a median income of $28,173 versus $23,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,622. About 2.0% of families and 7.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
