Thompson is a city in Winnebago County, Iowa, United States. The population was 596 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Thompson is located at coor dms|43|22|10|N|93|46|18|W|city (43.369562, -93.771765)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km²), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 596 people, 261 households, and 169 families residing in the city. The population density was 681.3 people per square mile (264.5/km²). There were 278 housing units at an average density of 317.8/sq mi (123.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.65% White, 0.34% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.67% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.51% of the population.

There were 261 households out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the city the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 9.9% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 89.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $32,868, and the median income for a family was $39,688. Males had a median income of $27,727 versus $21,630 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,919. About 8.4% of families and 9.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 2.9% of those age 65 or over.
